Acrobatic Flips

Just KITTEN Around Joke

Q: If a cat can jump five feet high, then why can’t it jump through a three-foot window?

A: Because the window is closed.

“Hey! I’m going to acrobatics,” Angel said. Her tail twitched in anticipation. “Coming?”

“No.” Jazz turned away, looking out the window. “It’s not for me.”

“It was fun.” Angel had loved the challenge of moving her body in new ways. And she loved the idea of being in control of how her body moved. She hoped it would help her become a better actress, with more views.

Jazz rolled her eyes. “Not me. I’ll get hurt.”

Angel tilted her head, her odd-colored eyes studying her roommate. “We’re different, aren’t we?” It was deeper than just different cat breeds. On a basic level, they wanted and needed different things. They were willing to do different things to reach their goals.

“I’m happy with who I am,” Jazz said.

“I’m never happy with me,” Angel said. “I always need to find what’s next.”

“You push me to do things differently.” Jazz sat awkwardly and tried to do a forward roll but couldn’t push herself over. Panting, she said, “Even when I don’t want to.”

“It’s easier,” Angel said, “if you keep your tail behind you. But, okay. I get it. You don’t have to come to acrobatics. But you’re missing out.”

“You can tell me all about it later.” Jazz waved a paw at Angel, then turned to her closet. She started flipping through her clothes. At the end of every month, she cleaned out costumes she’d outgrown.

Angel took the stairs down the two flights to the eighth floor. The Blue Room had windows on the hallway, so she saw right away that everything was dark. Angel stepped through the doorway and called, “Hello?”

“Come in.” Captain Piper, wearing camo leggings and a camo shirt, sat on a mat in the dark, stretching her legs.

Angel wondered if she ever wore color or if she always wanted to disappear into the background.

“Where is everyone?” Angel asked.

Captain Piper motioned at the empty room. “It looks like you’re the only one still interested in acrobatics.” She flopped back on the mat, spread-eagle, and sighed.

She’s sad, Angel thought, that no one else is interested. I’m sad too.

“I’m interested.” Rudy stood in the doorway, his shadow from the hallway lights reaching toward Captain Piper.

Angel sighed. She couldn’t escape the little Devon.

Captain Piper stood, a smooth, graceful movement. “Fine.” Her mouth was set in a hard line. “We’ll do it with just two kittens.”

“Is that enough?” Angel asked. She worried that acrobatics would end because no one showed up.

“I don’t know.” Captain Piper flipped on lights and trotted to a stack of foam cubes covered in orange fabric. She pulled several cubes to the room’s center. They were large, about three feet tall and three feet wide. “The Director has some project in mind, but he hasn’t told me what.”

“Oh, I know about that,” Angel said. “My groomer, Miss Tanya, said that Mr. Danny told her the Director got a call from a major movie director asking for help.
